Fine grain also needs small businesses. Two writers come to mind: Ciarán Breen has an article on How France Keeps Its Small Shops ..basically rent control. Katerine Ray has a substack called Storefront Revolt which gets into how difficult it is for a small business to buy a commercial property.

I think there's still probably more work to be done on creative parking solutions to make courtyard developments broadly appealing in the US context. Totally agreed that it's a significant additional expense either in land or structure; that it's bad to sacrifice the precious private-to-the-block internal courtyard green space/play space/hangout space for car storage; and that statutory parking minimums are bad policy. But if you want this kind of block design to attract families-- especially families with multiple children-- to stay in the city for the long haul, then at least the subset of units which are sized for those families need to have dedicated parking spaces somewhere on the block, because as you and I both recognize, the convenience value of a car with young kids is enormous.

While I'm quibbling, the family-sized units also would be a lot more appealing if they met US square footage expectations. In your sample floor plans (correct me if I've missed something!) they seem to top out at 1500 sq ft. That isn't going to satisfy a modern US family of five or six and will feel cramped even for a family of four, and the fact that our ancestors and our European counterparts got/get by fine in that much space doesn't change that. 2000 is IMO the sweet spot where it feels like a viable alternative to a traditional suburban SFR.

Also, I was reminded by this excellent Argument article:

that school siting is an underappreciated part of effective courtyard block design. Give those families a neighborhood elementary (or better yet, TK-8) school they can walk to and you've dramatically improved the total lifestyle proposition of the block; and giving them that requires its own unique kind of political coordination.
